We’re hiring! Join our US office as Social Impact Director

Role: Social Impact Director

Department: Futerra Strategy

Location: USA

Reports into: Chief Strategy Officer

Futerra is a change agency – a hybrid strategy consultancy and creative agency. Our mission is to make sustainable development so desirable it becomes normal. We believe sustainability is both a billion-dollar opportunity for business and a chance for us all to change the world for the better. We work with the world’s leading brands to find and unlock that opportunity through smart strategy and world-changing creative.

Futerra is mission owned. Everyone here joins to shape a world where social justice triumphs and racism is consigned to history – a world that is low-carbon, regenerative and circular.

We’re a tight and global team of committed people who pool their passion and abilities to work with huge brands and ground-breaking start-ups to drive positive change. Anti-racism, intersectional sustainability and climate justice are deeply held commitments in Futerra, and we will keep walking towards them every day.

Now we’re putting our imagination, passion and knowledge to work to further shape a more fair, equitable and inclusive society through our network of clients worldwide. And we need an amazing person to help us move the social impact dial even further.

We are looking for an experienced Social Impact Director or experienced changemaker, based within or with experience of US business.  You will have a track record of creating positive social change programmes within major organisations.  Whilst this new role will be centred on ‘social sustainability’, our work includes environmental priorities as well, so a strong knowledge of both ‘S’ and ‘E’ will help our work.

You will have a proven track record of developing strategies for diversity, equity and inclusion PLUS supply-chain human rights and labour practices in major organizations.

Most importantly, you will have a deep understanding of the landscape of inclusion and equity and be able to support clients in effectively shifting culture and implementing best practice across all areas of business.  On human rights and labour practices, you will be experienced in the principles and practice of international frameworks (ILO, UNGC etc.) and how to ensure that they are practically implemented across complex supply chains.

Whilst a degree and/or masters in a relevant field is desirable, what really matters is your proven experience in identifying opportunities for change in clients and then developing clear programs, targets, indicators and policies that make it happen.  Futerra welcomes traditional and non-traditional experience so it might be that you have helmed major community projects or driven meaningful policy change rather than worked solely in a business context.  If you think you have the skills and experience we need, get in touch.

You will be an inventive and tenacious self-starter capable of working as part of a cross functional agency team to blend social sustainability strategy with compelling copy and visual design to create an integrated package that drives real change.

You will also have a proven ability to identify new business opportunities and convert them into projects through the development of detailed proposals and compelling pitches.

Social impact/Sustainability skills – you will have experience in of all or many of the following disciplines:

  • Stakeholder engagement and materiality assessment
  • Issue prioritization and strategy framework creation
  • Development of workplace of codes of conduct and social policies
  • Development of social impact governance frameworks
  • Incubating cultural change across large organisations or communities

Finally, you will share our values on anti-racism, inclusion and equity and be excited at the prospect of working within a diverse, multigenerational team.  We strongly encourage people of every colour, orientation, age, gender, origin and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.

Futerrans are usually confident in:

  • Writing inspiring and credible content for proposals, pitches, workshops and strategy documents.
  • Personal communication skills and ability to engage and influence client teams in workshops and meetings.
  • Capacity to lead and develop a team of ambitious and capable international sustainability strategy professionals.
  • Desire to constantly reassess the social sustainability landscape and ability to work with others to evolve our offer.

The role is international with the potential for working with clients across multiple geographies but with a particular focus on building our impact and business on social sustainability within the United States.  The ideal candidate should therefore understand the political, economic, and social landscape of racial justice in the USA and how this intersects with sustainability and environmental justice.

You will be responsible for managing a small team of sustainability professionals and for working in close harmony with our accounts, planning and creative teams.
